Northwest Prevention Science - Proven tools and telehealth solutions for behavioral and mental health professionals, schools, and organizations that support at risk youth and families

Family Check-Up® Training

For organizations seeking to implement the Family Check-Up® either in-person or via telehealth, NPS supports individual and organizational capacity-building with eLearning, webinar-based skills training and personalized coaching.

Provider training is available for both individuals and groups. Supervisor/Trainer Certification is offered to providers who will be supporting implementations with fidelity by a larger organization or community with program implementation.

Level 1:  Knowledge Base Training - E-Learning Courses are available for any professional seeking CEUs and/or interested in a general introduction to the model.  E-learning consists of 15 to 20 hours of self-paced learning and evaluation.

Level 2:  Implementation Training and Support - Following completion of e-learning courses, Provider Training is offered to individuals or groups in an agency who intend to begin offering the Family Check-Up® with families.  Interactive webinar sessions are provided to small groups who apply the content learned through the e-learning courses through practice and role plays.  These sessions are followed by individualized or small group consultations, as well as access to thefamilycheckup.com resource portal (the FCU Portal).  The FCU Portal enables provider access to the latest assessment tools, handouts, example videos, and other resources that support model delivery.

Completion of Level 2 training, including prep time to review materials, requires approximately 15 hours.

In addition to provider training, implementation support and guidance is provided to the individuals or agency.

NOTE:  Level 2 provider training is not considered sufficient to sustain fidelity over time.  To sustain implementation with fidelity at an organizational or community level, NPS offers Certification of Supervisor-Trainers.

Level 3:  Sustainability Training and Support - Certified Supervisor-Trainers are necessary for any organization or community to sustain implementation of the Family Check-Up® with fidelity. A Certified Supervisor-Trainer is recognized by the UO/NPS as qualified to train and supervise new providers at their site and enables agencies to reduce long-term costs of training or re-training providers working on their team.  Time required to complete Level 3 training is tailored to the candidate for Certification and can vary widely, ranging from 20 to 25 hours for typical providers.   Certification is associated with individuals, not agencies, and retains validity in cases where a Supervisor-/Trainer changes their place of employment.

Sustaining Fidelity:  Key ingredients of any implementation that seeks to demonstrate fidelity over time include:

  • Maintaining Supervisor-Trainer Certification: recertification is required to be completed within 2 years of the last date of Certification, and every 2 years thereafter.

  • Using the COACH fidelity tool to review sessions completed by providers;

  • Documenting fidelity using internal management systems

  • New providers receiving complete training in the FCU model via the e-learning courses followed by delivery of the webinars by their Supervisor-Trainer

Everyday Parenting©

Grounded in behavioral parent skills training and 30 years of research, the Everyday Parenting© curriculum provides a valuable guide to help practitioners work collaboratively with parents to improve parenting and family management skills, based on goals established by parents. With regard to being an evidence-based program, Everyday Parenting© is considered to be part of the Family Check-Up® model.

This session-based approach is divided into three areas of skills grounded in the concept of mindful parenting: supporting positive behavior, setting healthy limits, and building family relationships by helping parents change interaction patterns that occur daily in families and relationships.

The Everyday Parenting© curriculum is an adaptation of the social learning approach to parent training and family intervention and is based on years of research showing that behavioral parent training reduces mental health problems in children across the lifespan. The curriculum emphasizes ways to support changes in family social interaction patterns to help reduce problem behavior and mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, and aggressive behavior, in children and adolescents.
